An investigation revealed that data protection rules were recently breached by the NHS, when an employee misplaced a memory stick containing sensitive data from patients’ medical records. It was later found in a supermarket car park.

The unencrypted personal memory stick contained medical records and criminal histories of patients staying at a secure hospital situated in the Falkirk area.

This case emphasises the importance of making all employees aware of the policies relating to storing and transferring patients’ sensitive information, and acting in accordance to the Data Protection Act.

Although the employee in question was suspended over this incident, the NHS has established that encryption software will be used and that “physical security measures” will now be adopted, with the aim of protecting data from unauthorised access.
